Barbie dolls, vestments, water pistols or birdsong — no object seems too banal or too curious to awaken the urge to collect. The motives of collectors are as varied as their collections themselves. Passionately, they gather, hoard and organise goods ranging from the tiniest to the enormous. Collecting plays an important role because it preserves things and their stories from oblivion and makes them available for the exploration and appropriation of knowledge. “Collectomania” presents a wide variety of collections from private and institutional collectors. With a wealth of design and everyday-culture objects as well as video portraits, the exhibition questions the social and cultural value of their activity.
