Of Material Value—what is it? The Textile Museum St. Gallen frames this question in three sensory propositions: Of Material Value helps in every walk of life, fosters creativity, and is sold all over the world. Of Material Value helps in every walk of life: textiles accompany us through life like a second skin, protect us, convey belonging, and create identity. Thanks in part to our clothing, we communicate with our surroundings continuously and sometimes very expressively without words. At the same time, home textiles make workspaces and living spaces functional, comfortable, and visually appealing. Through compelling objects—from glamorous stage costumes and informative sample books to practical climbing ropes—the permanent exhibition invites visitors on a journey of discovery. Of Material Value can be experienced with all the senses: historical film footage takes visitors into cotton weaving in Thurgau and interviews with contemporary witnesses reveal their creative sources of inspiration; textile raw materials and working techniques can be explored by touch; and visitors young and old are invited to the drawing table to design fabrics and garments themselves.
