The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel, however, focuses on viewing Flavin’s oeuvre in a less familiar context: his works often contain references in their titles to specific events, such as wartime atrocities or police violence, or are dedicated to other artists—for example the work untitled (in memory of Urs Graf), which bathes the inner courtyard of the main building in coloured light every evening. With this major temporary exhibition, the curators at Kunstmuseum Basel examine these narrative strategies through works and series spanning Flavin’s entire career and invite visitors on a sensory journey through his unique body of work.
