The Swiss design pioneer Willy Guhl (1915–2004) designed world-famous seating such as the Eternit beach chair and Europe’s first plastic shell seat. Over decades, Guhl taught a holistic approach to design oriented toward people and their needs: durability, functionality, and reduction to the essentials characterise his comfortable interiors and carefully considered everyday objects. As a teacher at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts (today the Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK), he showed generations of interior architects and product designers how good design can be understood with all the senses. The exhibition presents Willy Guhl’s work through design processes, prototypes, photographs, and films. It also offers many opportunities to try things out by hand.
