The desire to become intoxicated seems to be a fundamental human impulse. Even children occasionally enter an ecstatic state through play. Later, people seek intoxication in tests of courage and in sport, in music and dance, in love, spirituality, art, or in the consumption of psychoactive substances. For young people in particular, experiences of intoxication are especially alluring, yet dealing with risks or seductive tobacco and alcohol advertising is a major challenge. What exactly is intoxication? Why do we strive for ecstatic feelings, and what fascinates us so deeply about them? The exhibition explores the phenomenon of “intoxication” and its effects. On a multimedia journey, visitors encounter historical background as well as the opportunities and risks associated with states of intoxication.
