From commodity money to metal currency, from coins to paper, from banknotes to electronic coins: the history of money is one of dematerialisation and acceleration. And—as the recent example of the coronavirus pandemic has shown—also one of unbinding. How else can money be mobilised so quickly? Where do these vast sums come from, and how can we still grasp the complexity of today’s monetary world? The exhibition presents selected milestones in the history of money. Contemporary experts comment on the subject and open up discussion around the central question: “Can we trust our monetary system?” The exhibition was realised in collaboration with the Swiss National Bank. The National Bank and the Bernisches Historisches Museum are partners in a new experiential venue on the subject of money, which will open in Bern in 2024.
