Ropes, yarns, and threads are the starting materials for international textile artists who, from 1960 onward, radically expanded the possibilities of art. With sisal, wool, or maize, they revive proven cultural techniques of Indigenous peoples and seek a creative dialogue between material and technique. The woven or knotted works grow into space on an at times overwhelming scale and break through the boundaries between sculpture and environment. Outstanding pieces from the two most important fibre art collections — the Fondation Toms Pauli Lausanne and the museum’s own applied arts collection — evoke associations with plants, blossoms, or weather phenomena and invite the public to immerse themselves in an atmospheric staging.
