matí took part in the two-phase competition for the lighting of St. Nicolas Cathedral in Fribourg and placed among the top three teams. A lantern for St. Nicolas. Warmth, brilliance, glow, light as space — the lantern as the guiding image for the cathedral’s new lighting. From afar, the illuminated cathedral is visible as a landmark and focal point of the medieval old town, pointing the way to the heart of the city. Like a candle or a lantern, the cathedral is intended to appear as a brilliant point of light while simultaneously radiating warmth, depth, and a sense of comfort. The outer shell allows the interior to shimmer through and reveals its warm glow. Inside, an illuminated space unfolds; the layered quality and spatial breadth of the interior become tangible as soon as one enters.
