As one of Switzerland’s most important art museums, the Aargauer Kunsthaus holds a special place in the country’s museum landscape. Loepfe, Hänni & Haenggli’s 1956 building created generous spaces for Swiss art from the 18th century to the present day. Herzog & de Meuron’s foyer extension from 2003 appears inviting and accessible to the public and, with its strong formal and color design, stands apart clearly from the exhibition rooms. The renovation brings the lighting up to the latest technical standards. Replacing the luminaires and tracks made it possible to significantly improve light quality in terms of color rendering, control options, and flexibility for both general and accent lighting. The foyer has now taken on a new lighting character. The former linear recessed ceiling luminaires, which washed the vertical surfaces with broad light, were replaced by recessed track systems for spotlights with adjustable beam spreads.
