Rapperswil Castle
The heritage-protected castle is a landmark that overlooks the town of Rapperswil-Jona. Matí planned the lighting for the public areas inside and outside, as well as the facade lighting: the new access path winds its way up five floors as a concrete sculpture. The lighting design interpreted this impressive vertical structure as a single space: The lighting uses the shifts in the stairswell and flows from top to bottom across all floors. The graphic arrangement of the ceiling lights contrasts with the organic curves of the architecture, but never appears austere thanks to the change of direction and the play with lengths. A special luminaire in different versions was developed for the halls adjacent to the access route.
At dusk, the castle facade is illuminated. The light is projected precisely onto the outline of the building, preventing emissions into the night sky. The strong dimming makes the walls glow as if they were merely bathed in the reflection of the city.
